Housing—rental bonds
(Question No 2413)
Ms Le Couteur asked the Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, upon notice, on 5 April 2019 (redirected to the Treasurer):
(1) What is the average time it takes to process and return tenants’ bond money for each calendar month in the last three years that data is available for.
(2) Does the ACT Government provide information to tenants that they can apply directly for their bond return, rather than having the return form lodged by their real estate agent; if yes, how tenants are made aware of this; if not, has the ACT Government or is it considering any measures to better inform tenants that this option is available.
Mr Barr: The answer to the member's question is as follows:
(1) Please refer to table at Attachment A.
(2) The ACT Revenue Office website (www.revenue.act.gov.au/rental-bonds) contains useful information relating to bond refunds. Information is also contained in the Renting Book which Lessors/Agents must provide to tenants when they sign a lease. This book is also available through the ACT Revenue Office website (https://www.revenue.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/1097333/The-Renting-Book.pdf). Both the ACT Revenue Office website and the Renting Book state that either party may make an application to the ACT Revenue Office for the release of a bond. The ACT Revenue Office website provides detailed information about the process for a tenant applying for the release of a bond (https://www.revenue.act.gov.au/rental-bonds/how-to-lodge-a-bond-refund/tenants).
