Swearing in of members
The Clerk informed members of the requirements under section 9 of the Australian Capital Territory (Self-Government Act) 1988 (Cwlth) and section 6A of the Oaths and Affirmations Act 1984 that a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory shall, before taking his or her seat, make and subscribe an oath or affirmation before the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, or a person authorised by the Chief Justice.
The Hon Richard Christopher Refshauge, Acting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, having entered the chamber and been escorted by the Serjeant-at-Arms to the chair, handed to the Clerk at the table an authority, including an advice from the Chief Justice to the Attorney-General informing him of his absence, which were read and are as follows:

Dear Sir
I confirm that, by virtue of section 6 of the Supreme Court Act 1933 (ACT), I am currently acting as Chief Justice because the Chief Justice Terence Higgins AO is currently absent from duty and from Australia.
I am the next senior judge in Australia.
For your information, I enclose a copy of the Chief Justice’s notification to the Attorney-General.
