Discussion of matter of public importance
MR ASSISTANT SPEAKER (Mr Hargreaves): Mr Speaker has received letters from Ms Bresnan, Mr Coe, Mr Doszpot, Mrs Dunne, Mr Hanson, Mr Hargreaves, Ms Hunter, Ms Le Couteur, Ms Porter, Mr Seselja and Mr Smyth proposing that matters of public importance be submitted to the Assembly. In accordance with standing order 79, Mr Speaker has determined that the matter proposed by Ms Bresnan be submitted to the Assembly, namely:
Prevention, diversion and young offenders.
MS BRESNAN (Brindabella) (3.40): The ACT Greens have raised this matter of public importance today because we believe it is important that we have strong leadership and a clear vision for the youth justice system. In recent times we have seen a continued focus on incarceration, and strengthening a system to ensure we can fit them all in. We live in a city where, for the most part, young people make a positive contribution.
