Government agreement—Actew Corporation Ltd
Paper and statement by minister
MR STANHOPE (Ginninderra—Chief Minister, Treasurer, Minister for Business and Economic Development, Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Minister for the Environment, Water and Climate Change, Minister for the Arts): For the information of members, I present the following paper:
Territory-owned Corporations Act, pursuant to subsection 16 (3)—Statement—Government Agreement for Actew Corporation to establish a business presence in Thailand.
I ask for leave to make a statement in relation to the paper.
Leave granted.
MR STANHOPE: As required under section 16 of the Territory-owned Corporations Act, I hereby present details of the government’s consent for Actew Corporation Ltd to establish a business presence in Thailand. On 23 December 2006 the voting shareholders agreed that Actew could explore entry into the Thai market via the purchase of equity in an existing company and the creation of a new Thai company. The Actew investment is modest and carries relatively low risk.
Thailand is a suitable market for the Actew/ActewAGL/Ecowise group to expand into as part of a growth strategy within the framework of its current capabilities. The group will canvass new business opportunities in areas closely aligned to its core strengths, including water business, environmental services, waste water, gas and electricity. Actew views the successful establishment of business operations in Thailand as a vehicle for greater growth opportunities which, in turn, may provide further stable dividend streams to the government. I commend this statement to the Assembly.
