ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY QUESTION
QUESTION NO. 241
Consumer Affairs Legislation
MRS CARNELL - Asked the Attorney General upon notice on 11 August 1992:
(1) Does the Sale of Goods Act 1954 in any way duplicate the Consumer Affairs Act 1973?
(2) Will the Government consolidate or remove any sections of these two Acts which duplicate each other?
MR CONNOLLY - The answer to the members question is as follows:
(1) The Sale of Goods Act 1954 and the Consumer Affairs Act 1973 do not contain duplicate provisions.
(2) The Sale of Goods Act 1954 contains provisions which regulate the formation and performance of consumer contracts. Whereas the Consumer Affairs Act 1973 establishes the Consumer Affairs Bureau, makes provision for consumer affairs advisory committees and allows for the imposition of consumer product safety orders and standards.
